What’s Inside
Sustainable Design
The Design play Cards were developed in 2010 by Leyla Acaroglu as a way of getting people to rapidly think about sustainable design and engage with complex problem solving in a fun and playful way. The cards have 3 decks:
1. Design Problems outline a set of universal and real world social and environmental problems from toasters burning toast (and wasting food) through to the global issue of e-waste production.
2. Design Strategies outline a host of eco or sustainable design strategies that help to rethink the way things can be created and how these design problems can be solved. They range from design for disassembly to systems thinking and are great lenses to think through complex problem solving.
3. Design Inspiration these cards show a bunch of case studies and examples of how people have applied sustainable design to create successful business and innovation solutions.
There are many different ways to activate creative sustainable problem solving with the DPC, but here are some starter ideas:
In design teams: Get your team together and each select one of the design starters to ideate potential solutions you can apply to a design problem you are experiencing. Then compare the diversity of solutions that you have generated.
In educational settings: Have students work in teams to solve a design problem by using one or more of the design strategies.
By yourself: Use the cards as an inspiration deck or even as a memory game, where you try to connect the solutions to the problem set!
